The health club sales person ranted on about all sorts of specialized equipment, classes and programs offered by the 10,000 square foot facility. He did a great job selling Gina on the concept of a machine for every body part. He talked tirelessly about personal training, boot camp, kick boxing, hot yoga, and all the extras (that also cost extra). It sounded so good as he went into his smooth, very professionally albeit aggressive pitch.
But it's Gina's first day, and our heroine is wandering aimlessly around the gym, desperately trying to figure out just where to start. She thinks to herself, "Do I really need a separate exercise for every body part? How much cardio or weight training do I need? How many sets and how much weight is necessary? Should I purchase a few personal training sessions? " Her mind is reeling and she winds up doing some treadmill and bolting for home.
Frustrated, Gina hires Billy Bob, the club's hotshot trainer, at a rate of $70 an hour. As an ex-competitive body builder, BB's is expert at creating future-ex-body builders. Bi's and tri's on Monday, Chest and Back on Tuesday, a system that works for some... but all Gina wanted was to get healthier, stronger, feel and look better, and lose those pesky 15 pounds. Ms. Olympia was not on her agenda. Needless to say, Gina was not mentally or physically prepared Billy Bob's approach, and after three or four minor sprains and strains, she goes back to wandering aimlessly - because her membership contract has her committed to a full year of payments.
Sound familiar? Here's another version of the same story.
Driving home one day, Gina spots the new Kettlebell Fitness Gymnasium that just opened, AKC Fitness Long Island. The gym's display window showcases their main fitness tool, the professional grade kettlebell. She's curious, but intimidated, by these brightly colored balls that look sooo heavy. Gina musters up the courage to walk in and find out just what Kettlebell Fitness is all about.
She is greeted immediately by one of the many coaches on duty, and notices multiple lifting stations, where every exerciser has his or her designated space. The courteous coach explains that no one ever trains unsupervised - and yes, it's all included in the monthly membership - with zero extra costs. He calls it Semi-Personalized Squad Training - where members can show up any time, without an appointment, and receive professional level kettlebell and fitness instruction.
The knowledgeable AKC Coach / Trainer goes on to say that every kettlebell exercise is considered full body work, with no use for muscle isolation, as that is not how the human body functions. AKC Fitness is all about the Fedorenko Method of Kettlebell Lifting (perfected by World Champion, Valery Fedorenko), utilizing a system of timed, high-rep sets with high-level technique... a very safe and effective process that's been in place in Russia for well over 50 years. He also informs Gina that AKC Fitness LI offers personalized programming for weight loss, muscle definition, sports performance, health and wellness, and much more. The Coach's low pressure and informative mini-lecture gets Gina thinking.
