What is a Kettlebell?
In 1948 Kettlebell Lifting became the national sport in Russia, and today kettlebells are becoming enormously popular in this country. From your local neighborhood gym, to the December 2010 issue of Shape Magazine, to the hit show The Biggest Loser, kettlebells are everywhere. The Secret Service uses the kettlebell to train their most elite forces. While a recent study at the University of Wisconsin found kettlebell lifting to burn more calories than running or weight training, at 20 calories burned every minute.
Professionally run competitions are held around the world and right here in the United States. There is a major effort being made by the World Kettlebell Club (WKC) to include kettlebell lifting as part of the next Olympic Games. In the last five years, as popularity grows, there have been dozens of competitions in America. In December 2010 the WKC recently held a competitive event at AKC Fitness LI, and our next competitive event is scheduled for March, 2011.
With names that mirror Olympic lifts, the Jerk is an explosive full body PUSH; the Snatch is a ballistic full body PULL. And there is a third movement known as Long Cycle, which puts push and pull together in one super efficient exercise. A handful of foundation exercises round out the arsenal.
Our unique kettlebell fitness system is used everyday at AKC Fitness LI. My staff works with men and women from all backgrounds, and fitness levels, with remarkable results in fitness, weight loss, and performance. Most members experience an over 500 percent strength and endurance gain in the first three months.
